I don’t know what possessed me, but today I found myself plugging in my Nintendo Wii. As our readers are probably aware; I play Xbox 360 primarily. Well I hit up some Wii shop channel, endured an update, and began to browse. Now it had been quite some time since I have checked up on this plethora of games, so I was pleasantly surprised at some of the titles I saw before me. Before long I realized I was making a mental list of the games that I fancied most as I browsed. Then it occurred to me that I should share this list with you nerds and maybe get a little bit of guidance in terms of Wii point spending. Here before you are five games available for download on the Wii that I would like:
Contra Rebirth – If you’re not familiar with the Contra franchise then you have lead a hollow, incomplete existence. This original Wii-ware title tells a tale about the earth suffering at the hands of the Neo-Salamander army and the galactic president requesting your aid and blah blah blah you shoot a lot of people and jump over stuff and its fun. I’ve always enjoyed the fast-paced style of game-play Contra offered so I would hope that this game represents!
Paper Mario – I’ve had several buddies tell me that I’m missing out because I had never experienced the joy of Paper Mario for the Nintendo64. Rumor has it that this nonlinear RPG has a fun vibe, exotic and brightly colored locales, and a wide cast of playable characters. I had always enjoyed the Super Mario RPG! I would not mind making this acquisition as well.
Altered Beast – When Zeus ordered you to rise from your grave to rescue his daughter you did just that! You got right up and started beating some ass. This Sega Genesis classic had you battling the forces of evil using different transformations. You could become a beast-mode werewolf, some kind of angry dragon, a were-bear, a swift tiger, and a golden werewolf that was apparently the pinnacle of transformations. Each form had its own unique abilities and uses. This gem of a game was pleasantly difficult to defeat!
Boogerman – Yeah, Boogerman. This SNES game was not really revolutionary in any sense. It did not offer ground breaking graphics nor was it an amazing story. It did not offer a two-player mode and it was surprisingly short. By now I’m sure you may be wondering just what the appeal was. You could stick your finger in your nose and launch whatever came out at people. You could take to the skies via the power of your explosive farts. Dude, you dealt justice with boogers. The boss fights were always a treat as they were often the most bizarre super-villains you could dream up. Does anyone remember the Deoder-Ant?
Zombies Ate My Neighbors – The original co-op zombie killing experience right here. These guys were doing it long before it was in style. This SNES top-down shooter put you in the role of a couple of kids just trying to survive in a town over-run by the undead. When I think back on playing this I fondly recall throwing soda-pop grenades at giant babies and shooting water guns at monstrous ants. I remember always wondering “Just what the hell else could they possibly throw at us in the next level?!?” I certainly would not mind playing this one through again!
Have you guys ever played any of these games? If you have one of these and it’s not as fun as I’d like then you had better warn me! When I get my hands on some more Wii points I’ll be sure to get down on these and maybe have a good time, or realize that I have pierced the pleasant fog of nostalgia and that I just dumped a couple bucks on a game that sucks. Well, only one way to find out! You got any suggestions? Some fun games that I failed to observe or mention? Well let me know!
