Review: Hungry Giraffe (PSN)

Hungry Giraffe by Laughing Jackal for the PSN. Ehem, No, no no no no no no no…NO! I was not a fan of this game. You play as a giraffe with an insatiable appetite and the longest neck in the world. You, the mutant giraffe, have to eat food magically suspended in the air. The more food you eat the longer the giraffe’s neck grows and the higher you go, it’s just that simple. “That’s not so bad” you might say to yourself and I would say, “Oh, just you wait.”

Along with the magical floating food, there are floating obstacles that impede your progress. Obstacles include: levitating anvils that stop you dead in your tracks if you run into them, dumbbells that weighs down long neck if he eats them, and paint that splashes on the screen to obscure your view. Still not so bad, but here’s where I stopped playing. The last obstacle that stretch has to avoid is a psychotropic pill that makes the game violently flash between neon blue and white while reversing the controls. I don’t know about you, but when a game makes me reach for a Tylenol because a core feature has given me a headache, that’s when I call it quits. Now if you look past this potential medical emergency, this game is kind of mediocre. Levels are pretty easy once you realize that the obstacles have a repeating pattern and even though the game looks pretty, it doesn’t make up for the lack of innovation. Hungry Giraffe comes with a price tag of $3.49 which isn’t bad if it weren’t for the fact that I could find similar games for the iPhone or the Android for free.
