God of War 3 Demo Impressions

First off, God of War 3 is a beautiful game, albeit it does seem like an HD God of War the original title from PlayStation 2 was great and still holds up; (a la God of War Collection on PS3) if anyone is looking for an innovative iteration they may be disappointed but like I’ve stated it looks gorgeous.  This has been a big title in the eyes of many PlayStation 3 owners and it’s one of the most anticipated games this generation, let alone this year.  The God of War series is known for its fluidity and its ability to have you do a lot with almost no effort.  It’s still feels like you’re playing God of War; there is your light and heavy attacks and you can use them in any combination that you like.  I had the chance recently to play the God of War 3 demo that was featured in this past E3 and it left me wanting more; Kratos is almost back and I can not wait to get the full experience of this game!

The demo is about 20 minutes give or take depending on how fast you can play.  You start off the demo by entering the city of Olympia. If you have completed God of War 2 you would know that the game ends with Kratos and the Titans making their move towards Olympus; so I’m guessing the story of GoW3 will resolve with Kratos destroying the city. The demo begins with you obviously taking control of Kratos as he fights through Olympia; after a quick tutorial on how to fight (as well as fly and glide) you meet the god Helio.  The god begins to attack Titan Perses in front of you in the distance meanwhile you fight off a Minotaur. All of the enemies, excluding the “henchmen” army from hell, conclude with a quick time sequence. You can also change your primary weapon in real time — in this demo I played with: The Blades of Chaos, that you should be very familiar with by now, and the Cestus which are a pair of gauntlets that remind me of Cerberus. You can also use Apollo’s bow in the demo which is useful for getting enemies out of reach from your blades. After you fight off the many soldiers that spawn as the Minotaur makes his entrance you are prompt with a quick time event ending with Kratos literally gutting the poor beast.

My favorite fight sequence of the game is when you are headed towards the paralyzed Helio, and you are suddenly confronted by a group of armored demons and a Cyclops.  After the cyclops is given enough damage you are able to take control of him and make short work of the armored soldiers leaving Helio vulnerable to his inevitable demise. You then decapitate Helio with your bare hands acquiring his head as one of your equipment. You can use his head much like you used Medusa’s or Euryale’s head in the previous God of War titles. The last portion of the demo has you flying up a vertical shaft using your Wings of Icarus.  The wings play a vital role in the gameplay; after double jumping you can press X a third time to sprout your wings and glide helping you get to those hard to reach ledges.  As you fly up the shaft you must avoid the incoming meteors and falling debris; the demo ends with Kratos emerging from the exit of the shaft and flying straight to Purses with his blades ready to attack.  The game seems to be ditching Greek mythology so I’m interested to see the direction they take for the narrative of this title.  If you pre-order now you can get a code to play the E3 demo for yourself. This game ships March 16th only for the PlayStation 3.
